Kebab Mahal (7 Nicolson Square, Edinburgh) | The List

Takeaway review Unfairly overshadowed by the cheaper, more student-friendly Mosque establishments across the square, Kebab Mahal has long been an excellent location for budget curry in a hurry.

You can also takeaway (there's no delivery service), though off site their side dishes seem a little lacking in flavour, with undercooked aloo ghobi, bland naan and cheap-tasting veg.

It might not look like much from the outside – or from the inside for that matter – but Kebab Mahal is one of Edinburgh’s best-loved curry and kebab houses.

Kebab meat is lightly charcoaled and full of flavour, while Indian food is a little hotter than other places in town.

The prices may be higher than you’d expect from such a no-frills establishment, but portions are so generous – dishes overflow with chicken and lamb and are accompanied by gigantic crispy naans and platters of rice – that you won’t leave feeling short-changed.

For many, a stop at the Central after a night of drinking or clubbing is an integral part of any good night out with friends.

Open until 2am Sunday to Thursday and 3 am Friday and Saturday, Central is the perfect place to grab a bite long after every other takeaway has closed its doors - and they will even deliver to your home for a small extra charge.

Central is a traditional chip shop, serving a wide array of fried goods, but they also serve decent burgers, pizzas and kebabs as well as a selection of crisps and sweets.

A Halal curry canteen by day and a kebab and pizza takeaway by night, expect hearty curries and value for money With its turquoise shop front and neon sign glowing the words ‘Halal, Indo-Pak, East Indian and Kebabs’ in the window, Kebab Mahal’s been a student favourite for decades because of its low prices and filling platefuls.

This tiny, unfussy curry house is a sit-in option for tandoori dishes through the day, and a takeaway joint for kebabs and pizzas until 2am in the morning.

Most of the main courses (mostly lamb and chicken dishes, with one or two fish dishes and a good range of vegetarian options) come in around a fiver (rice and nan bread are extra), and are best enjoyed with a glass of mango lassi.

Don’t expect a sense of occasion - the owner Mr Khan concentrates on keeping the prices low and the food fresh - in fact, be prepared to share your table with whoever else is needing a seat that day - as well as attracting a steady flow of students, on Fridays it’s a popular pit-stop for hungry Muslims leaving the Mosque and tourists needing cheap eats.

At 95p for a takeaway coffee, it must be one of the cheapest caffeine fixes in town too, another draw for the austerity-stricken student.
